D-Day Anniversary: Looking Back at Duke’s Contribution to the Effort in World War II
When the Allied Forces attacked the German army on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day 80 years ago this Thursday, Duke students and alumni were there.
More than 2,500 Americans died on June 6, 1944, on those beaches. At least two of them were Duke alumni and are now honored on the university’s memorial wall outside of Duke Chapel: 1st Lt. Marcus Vincent Courtney '43 Army Air Corps, and Maj. Michael McPharlin ’36 Army Air Corps. SSG Donald Blake ’40 died the following day and 1st Lt. Richard Augustus
